Once-in-a-generation memoir of a rock legend - the No. 1 SUNDAY TIMES bestseller.
'Electrifying' New York Times
'A masterpiece' The Word
'Funny, poignant, brutally honest' Sunday Telegraph
With the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards created the riffs, the lyrics and the songs that roused the world, and over four decades he lived the original rock and roll life: taking the chances he wanted, speaking his mind, and making it all work in a way that no one before him had ever done.
Now, at last, the man himself tells us the story of life in the crossfire hurricane. And what a life. Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records as a child in post-war Kent. Learning guitar and forming a band with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones. The Rolling Stones' first fame and success as a bad-boy band. The notorious Redlands drug bust and subsequent series of confrontations with a nervous establishment that led to his enduring image as outlaw and folk hero.
Creating immortal riffs such as the ones in 'Jumping Jack Flash' and 'Street Fighting Man' and 'Honky Tonk Women'. Falling in love with Anita Pallenberg and the death of Brian Jones. Tax exile in France, wildfire tours of the US, 'Exile on Main Street' and 'Some Girls'. Ever increasing fame, isolation and addiction. Falling in love with Patti Hansen. Estrangement from Mick Jagger and subsequent reconciliation. Solo albums and performances with his band the Xpensive Winos. Marriage, family and the road that goes on for ever.
In a voice that is uniquely and intimately his own, with the disarming honesty that has always been his trademark, Keith Richards brings us the essential life story of our times. -

Julie Assouly, Marianne Kac-Vergne
- Artois Presses Université
- 3 Avril 2024
- 9782848325880

Westkunst, 1981 : A Historiography of Modernism Exhibited
Mathilde Arnoux, Thomas-W. Gaehtgens, Peter Geimer

- 9782735130580
In 1981, the Cologne Trade-Fair centre hosted a large exhibition titled Westkunst: Zeitgenssische Kunst seit 1939 [Western Art: Contemporary Art since 1939]. Organised by art critic Laszlo Glozer and curator Kasper Knig, the Western-centric survey highlighted avant-garde art and politically charged themes of freedom and individual expression. By examining Westkunst's historiographical stakes in light of the Iron Curtain division of Europe, the show is revealed in this collective volume as paradigmatic of the ways in which hegemonic concepts of Western art' and the accompanying processes of othering were fashioned in the art world. Westkunst's universalising claims are scrutinised here by focusing on the artistic tendencies exhibited; on exhibitionary discourses and practices of decontextualisation, comparison, and appropriation; on the alleged realisation of the values of progress, freedom, and autonomy; on the enacted conceptions of temporality and the architectural devices of narrativisation; and on the exhibition's blind spots and exclusions and the critical reactions it elicited. This analytic output makes fresh use of the archival materials, which are neither centralised nor systematised, with significant excerpts republished throughout the book. Seen through the lens of exhibition history, this revisiting of Westkunst sheds light on a broader trend of cultural conservatism that was gaining strength in the 1980s, just before the end of the Cold War, and on the start of new forms of globalisation.

'Exuberantly entertaining' NYT Book Review
'Mark Braude's writing and subject make this book irresistible, as was Kiki herself.' Jim Jarmusch
'A delightful, marvelously readable, meticulously-researched romp of a book, Kiki Man Ray brings to life not just the kaleidoscopically talented Kiki herself, but the endlessly fascinating Montparnasse milieu over which she reigned.' Whitney Scharer, author of THE AGE OF LIGHT
Though many have never heard her name, Alice Prin - Kiki de Montparnasse - was the icon of 1920s Paris. She captivated as a ground-breaking nightclub performer, wrote a bestselling memoir, sold out exhibitions of her paintings, and shared drinks and ideas with the likes of Pablo Picasso, Peggy Guggenheim, and Marcel Duchamp. She also shepherded along the career of a then-unknown American photographer: Man Ray.
Following Kiki in the years between 1921 and 1929, when she lived and worked with Man Ray, Kiki Man Ray charts their complicated entanglement and reveals how Man Ray - always the unabashed careerist - went on to become one of the most famous photographers of the twentieth century, enjoying wealth and prestige, while Kiki's legacy was lost.
But this isn't a story of an overbearing male genius and his defeated muse. During the 1920s it was Kiki, not Man Ray, who was the brighter of the two rising stars and a powerful figure among the close-knit community of models, painters, writers and café wastrels who made their homes in gritty Montparnasse. Following the couple as they created art, struggled for power and competed for fame, Kiki Man Ray illuminates for the first time Kiki's seminal influence on the culture of 1920s Paris, and challenges ideas about artists and muses, and the lines separating the two.
'Kiki de Montparnasse was more than a muse - she was a vivacious, independent woman whose talent and magnetism helped make Paris the center of the art world in the 1920s. In Mark Braude's riveting cultural history, the Queen of Montparnasse rises again. This is a lively and compassionate tribute to the chanteuse, model, and portraitist who held center stage in her life, and who inspired some of the finest Surrealist art of the twentieth century.' Heather Clark, author of Pulitzer Prize-finalist Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath -
New York Times bestseller When The Kinfolk Table was published in 2013, it transformed the way readers across the globe thought about small gatherings. In this much-anticipated follow-up, Kinfolk founder Nathan Williams showcases how embracing that same ethos—of slowing down, simplifying your life, and cultivating community—allows you to create a more considered, beautiful, and intimate living space. The Kinfolk Home takes readers inside 35 homes around the world, from the United States, Scandinavia, Japan, and beyond. Some have constructed modern urban homes from blueprints, while others nurture their home’s long history. What all of these spaces have in common is that they’ve been put together carefully, slowly, and with great intention. Featuring inviting photographs and insightful profiles, interviews, and essays, each home tour is guaranteed to inspire.

“I’ve paged through stacks of books on the history of watches. . . . But I hadn’t come across a book that actually moved me until I picked up A Man and His Watch. The volume is filled with heartfelt stories.”—T: The New York Times Style Magazine "There are a bunch of beautifully illustrated watch books out there, but A Man & His Watch by Matt Hranek is more than that. It speaks to the nature of watches as deeply personal items."—Gear Patrol, Coffee Table Books Our Staff Can’t Live Without Paul Newman wore his Rolex Daytona every single day for 35 years until his death in 2008. The iconic timepiece, probably the single most sought-after watch in the world, is now in the possession of his daughter Clea, who wears it every day in his memory. Franklin Roosevelt wore an elegant gold Tiffany watch, gifted to him by a friend on his birthday, to the famous Yalta Conference where he shook the hands of Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill. JFK’s Omega worn to his presidential inauguration, Ralph Lauren’s watch purchased from Andy Warhol’s personal collection, Sir Edmund Hillary’s Rolex worn during the first-ever summit of Mt. Everest . . . these and many more compose the stories of the world’s most coveted watches captured in A Man and His Watch. Matthew Hranek, a watch collector and NYC men’s style fixture, has traveled the world conducting firsthand interviews and diving into exclusive collections to gather the never-before-told stories of 76 watches, completed with stunning original photography of every single piece. Through these intimate accounts and Hranek’s storytelling, the watches become more than just timepieces and status symbols; they represent historical moments, pioneering achievements, heirlooms, family mementos, gifts of affection, and lifelong friendships.

'Mightily entertaining' - Heat People ask me how come I'm still alive, and I don't know what to say. When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of sixty, with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and California, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f**king way. But here I am: ready to tell my story, in my own words, for the first time. A lot of it ain't gonna be pretty. I've done some bad things in my time. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working class kid from Aston, who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time.

'Birkin's diary entries ultimately expose the toxic reality behind one of the 20th century's most glamorous couples' Sunday Times
Jane Birkin - actor, singer, songwriter and model - may have shot to worldwide fame through her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg and their controversial hit 'Je t'aime ... moi non plus', but it would be her wide-ranging acting career and effortless Gallic cool that was to truly cement her legacy as an enduring international icon.
In Munkey Diaries, the first volume of Birkin's diaries, we're transported to the flamboyant world of London in the Swinging Sixties and Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the 1970s. There are intimate revelations about Jane's tumultuous life with her first husband, the composer John Barry, and her romantic and professional collaboration with Gainsbourg, as well as keen insights into her working life as an actor, singer and songwriter.
Far from an ordinary memoir, Munkey Diaries offers a unique window into the early life and loves of an extraordinary woman. -
In SCAR TISSUE Anthony Kiedis, charismatic and highly articulate frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, recounts his remarkable life story, and the history of the band itself.
Raised in the Midwest, he moved to LA aged eleven to live with his father Blackie, purveyor of pills, pot, and cocaine to the Hollywood elite. After a brief child-acting career, Kiedis dropped out of U.C.L.A. and plunged headfirst into the demimonde of the L.A. underground music scene. He formed the band with three schoolfriends - and found his life's purpose. Crisscrossing the country, the Chili Peppers were musical innovators and influenced a whole generation of musicians.
But there's a price to pay for both success and excess and in SCAR TISSUE, Kiedis writes candidly of the overdose death of his soul mate and band mate, Hillel Slovak, and his own ongoing struggle with an addiction to drugs.
SCAR TISSUE far transcends the typical rock biography, because Anthony Kiedis is anything but a typical rock star. It is instead a compelling story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption. -

The Prince of Romanée-Conti
Laurens Delpech
- Flammarion
- Hors collection
- 21 Octobre 2020
- 9782080239563
Prince Louis François de Bourbon-Conti - cousin of King Louis XV of France - was a patron of contemporary intellectuals such as Diderot, Beaumarchais, and Rousseau, and well-known as an avid art collector. His stroke of genius was the purchase of the Romanée vineyard, which later became known as the Romanée-Conti.
This volume reveals the secrets of the legendary wine, which has earned a cult following of connoisseurs around the world. Following a biography of the Prince of Conti, detailed notes from recent wine tastings allow readers to identify the characteristics of this unique wine, which must be considered within the context of the Climats of Burgundy-the terroirs where the Burgundian grape varieties grow in optimal conditions. These fabled terroirs have benefited from a unique, centuries-long continuity and they were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.
To understand Burgundy, readers must be familiar with its Climats, but also conscious of the climate-the meteorological conditions in which each vintage is created-because the production of fine wines, and especially of those made from grape varieties at the very height of maturity, resembles at times an obstacle course created by nature to play tricks on the winegrower. Laurens Delpech-through lengthy excerpts from harvest reports published since 1996 by Aubert de Villaine,
co-director of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti-recounts the saga of successive vintages, which illuminates the difficulty of the vigneron's profession.
This original, complete, and engaging volume brings to the forefront the duality of the Climats and climate that give rise to the finest wines in Burgundy. An excellent overview of the Romanée-Conti, it is also essential reading for those who wish to sharpen their knowledge and appreciation of Burgundian wines.
